TLDR: 3 out of 3 bicycles were not maintained properly. Bring a toolkit for the trip! (1/5)

---

A man and a woman greeted me and my friend. With our limited Italian knowledge we asked for an electric and a non-electric bicycle.

We took a look at them. I felt that the non-electric bike (for the time: my bike) had low air pressure in both of the tires and had the seat set in a strange upwards angle.

We have stated that we are going on a trip to the top of Vesuvius and so we felt like we are complaining at the start for a good reason. The bikes should be in a good condition at least when we start the trip.

I got another bike of the same type (a city bike). It had the seats in a good position and the front tire was fine.

We had a ticket to Vesuvius and didn't want to arrive half a day later so we moved on.

2 streets up the city I realized that the air pressure is too low even in the new bike's rear tires. We have looked for a mechanic's shop to fix the problem. Luckily the guys there were fantastic and solved the situation in a moment.

Since the road was so steep, I couldn't ride the bike for so long. I always stopped after short periods of pedaling.

The uphill was done! The view was fantastic from the volcano, it was time to get down to the city.

On the way down I realized that the handle bar was not tightened. Of course I had no chance to fix it on the spot so I kept rolling down the volcano slowly.

After returning the bikes, we confronted a younger man and the same woman about these issues.

Here are the repeated answers:
'I am sorry that the trip hasn't gone well, I cannot do anything.'
'These are completely new bicycles, if something is wrong then we send it back to the factory.'
'If something is wrong with the bikes, we should return them instantly.'

In the last sentence he was right, but also my expectation of a rental service is way higher. The safety & satisfaction of clients should be priorities!

(If you are interested in the electric bike's condition, please find my friend's review somewhere around here.)

Worst bike ride of my life

Our trip's goal was to go up the Vezuvio, visit the site and then go down from there enjoying the view and the corners on some bikes. I rented an electric bike from this shop which was from the Coppi brand. Instead of enjoying the way up and down I had to face the following problems:

The left crank was loose the whole way:
On the way up the left crank got loose and it nearly fell off, I tightened it with my knife but without proper tools it was a Sisyphus work.

Rear brake suddenly stopped working:
Coming down from the top after the first 5 or 6 turns the rear brake suddenly stopped working. It was fortunate because I was not 100% trusting the bike so I didn't start riding down as fast as I would on my own bike.

If I did and the failure would have happened then, it could have been fatal for me. I was lucky.

The rear derailleur wasn't set properly so I couldn't use 2 gears of the set.

So the journey in short was like this:
Tightening the crank every once in a while it started to wobble and coming down very slowly instead of rushing down enjoying the corners from the 1000+ meters top since only the front brakes were working for God knows how long.

When we returned to the shop and  confronted the shop assistant with these failures he said that these were our mistakes, since we shouldn't have rode up to Vezuvio on these "city bikes" as he called these. (We told the shop assistant who we rented the bikes from that we are going to Vezuvio) He avoided taking responsibility for the failures despite the fact that these things are a matter of proper maintanance and these problems made the ride unsafe. He didn't seem competent, he just continued repeating the same statements without answering our questions. We tried to negotiate for half an hour and ask for a refund on the service since it was miserable but they refused to.

Moreover, my friend who I rented bikes with also had problems with his bike on the way.

It is such a shame that these problems could have been avoided by 5 minutes of maintenance on the bikes and everyone would have been happy. Instead the ride was unsafe and annoying.

This was my worst bike ride of my life.
